I am a husband, dad, community organizer/youth developer who believes that youth development is community development. I have been a bicyclist all of my life, and have been bicycle touring for 25 years. For the past 17 years I have been leading youth development programs in small mobile home communities near Saint Paul, Minnesota. Also, each summer I run a youth bicycle program, teaching kids bike repair and taking them on rides around our region.

I have wanted to travel across the country by bike for many years. My wife and I first considered it as a honeymoon trip, but calculated that in the time we had available, we would only make it halfway across the country. Instead, we spent our honeymoon biking seven weeks down the Rocky Mountains from Alberta, Canada to Wyoming.

Last year I hatched a plan to ride across the country in 2010. To inspire the kids in my programs to do challenging things in their own lives, I decided to write a blog documenting my journey.

FamilyMeans, the nonprofit organization I work for, granted me a summer sabbatical to complete that challenge. Now summer is here, and you are along for the ride.
